Cheesy lingo and terrible plot lines?! I smell a good-bad teen movie. And I’m in. Here are our 10 fave teen movies:

Pretty in Pink

One of Jon Cryer and Molly Ringwald’s most famous roles was playing “Duckie” and Andie in John Hughe’s Pretty in Pink. When it came out in 1986, Pretty in Pink became an instant classic and still is today. Andie is surviving high school but when Blane, a rich, sensitive playboy is interested in her, she finds herself in a triangle, seeing as her best friend Duckie has had a crush on her for years. The movie is all about whether or not a relationship between a rich guy and a poor girl can work in high school where status is everything.

The Breakfast Club

Another John Hughes film, The Breakfast Club follows a day in the life of five teenagers stuck in detention, all starting off as part of a clique or typical high school stereotype. You have the jock, the smart kid, the school beauty, the rebel and the freak. What’s great about this movie is that by the end of it they all realize their similarities rather than focusing on their differences. This 1985 classic can resonate with any generation.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Another teen classic is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off . Released in 1986, everyone fell in-love with Matthew Broderick when he played a teenager who skips school for the day and instead sets out on an adventure through Chicago with his girlfriend, Sloan and overly-cautious best friend, Cameron. What I love about this movie, amongst all the scheming and lying, it actually has a few great lessons.

16 Candles

So clearly John Hughes knew what he was doing when it came to teen films because he had another hit on his hands when Sixteen Candles was released in 1984Samantha is dealing with her crush on the most popular guy in school and the fact that her nerdy friend has a crush on her at the same time. To top it off, her sister is getting married and amongst all the excitement of planning, her family forgets her sixteenth birthday.

Rebel Without a Cause

Okay, it may have come out in 1955 but Rebel Without a Cause is definitely one of the original iconic teen films. No one played a rebellious, troubled teen like James Dean, who gave his most memorable performance as Jim Stark. After a few run-ins with trouble in other cities, Jim and his family move to a new town, where at his new school, he forms a strong friendship with Plato, played by Sal Mineo, and a relationship with Judy played by Natalie Wood. This movie is a classic and if you haven’t seen it I recommend giving it a viewing.

Easy A

Who didn’t fall in love with Emma Stone in Easy A? Centered around Hester Prynne’s The Scarlet Letter, this film offers a lot of laughs. Emma Stone plays Olive, a highschool student whose clean cut reputation gets tarnished after a lie about losing her virginity starts circulating at school. But, ever resourceful, she decides to make lemonade out of lemons, deciding to use this rumour to advance her social and financial status at school.

American Pie

Who can forget the gang from American Pie? The best of the series, this movie was so wrong it was right. We couldn’t get enough of it when it came out in 1999, so much so that they went on to make three more films. Following the final high school year of four teen boys desperate to lose their virginity on prom night, American Pie brought the hilarity, especially when it came to those, let’s say awkward conversations between Jim and his dad played by Eugene Levy.

10 Things I Hate about You

A lot of people may remember Heath Ledger as being THE best Joker in any Batman movie (Sorry Jack Nicholson) but chances are if you grew up in the 90s you’ll remember him as Patrick Verona, the brooding bad boy in 1999′s 10 Things I Hate About You, based on Shakepeare’s Taming of the Shrew. After setting eyes on Bianca, the popular girl who isn’t allowed to date until her sister does, Cameron, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, enlists the help of Patrick to warm up to her sister Kat, played by Julia Styles, and convince her to go out with him. This one has always been one of my favourites and a part of my collection.

Mean Girls

It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when Lindsay Lohan was actually known for her acting, and in 2004 she starred as Cady Heron in Mean Girls. After moving from Africa and into a new high school, Cady finds herself “friends” with the cattiest and most popular girls in school, “The Plastics”, and when she ends up falling for Regina George’s (Rachel McAdams), ex-boyfriend things get nasty. Written by Tina Fey, Mean Girls became an instant hit with teens and is some of Lindsay’s best work.

Grease

High school students singing about their feelings is nothing new…  And no one did it better than John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the 1978 classic Grease. Set in 1959, Sandy is the clean cut, good girl and Danny is the bad boy greaser and after one summer together, they find themselves attending the same high school beginning a romance chase full of fun tunes and equally fun wardrobe.
